Excerpt from Staked

“Tell me what you have heard,” I said when we settled onto a small bench surrounded by boxwoods. We were far from the house and anyone trying to listen in on the conversation.
“The one that made me always told me to steer clear of Octavius and his brother Atticus. He said they were dangerous to our kind. I had never met either of them and so I took this warning lightly. You have to understand my maker also warned me to stay out of the light and that garlic could hurt me. He also feared the church. Imagine how amazed I was that I walked into a church and did not melt into a pile of guts! About five years ago Rent came to me and said he had taken residence here along with his friend, Aerin. I gave them my blessing to live and hunt. It wasn’t long before Rent came to me again to say his brother, Octavius was coming to stay in the city. The name obviously set off an alarm in my head. I already knew what my maker had told me. I called up the Elders and asked what they knew of Octavius. The Elders of our kind told me that Octavius appeared long ago with no real origins. He fed like them and feared the sun like them. No one questioned what he was since they didn’t know what they were only that they were monsters. The curiosity was Atticus.” Her voice lowered as she leaned in. “You see Atticus was not like any of them. He liked to feed like them but he also had human qualities. Imagine all those centuries ago being scared you’d burn in the sun and this asshole shows up one day and he’s able to live among the very thing you feed upon for life. The elders said that Atticus disappeared for a very long time and reappeared in the last century calling himself Rent Tres. Imagine the bells that went off in my head. It was like this siren and I knew I could not trust them. They had arrived in my city and I knew they must be planning something!”
“What did you do?” She sat back and she shook her head,
“Nothing. If this was like the church and garlic warning. I knew my maker was paranoid. I left them to do what they wished. I did keep an eye on their transgressions though. I didn’t know that Rent was with you though. Was it recent, Cara? I had heard stories he was seeing someone younger.” I shrugged then looked toward the house, I could see that the crowd was thinning now. I also noticed that the sky was beginning to get light.
“You know I think we should get you inside.”
